Magical Mystery Tour · Vol. 2

A wandering essay on the lesser-known corners of the world

Worldwide · GlobalPublished November 2025
Introduction

Magical Mystery Tour 2 started in Istanbul and ventured deeper into Eastern and Southern Europe visiting Skopje, Belgrade, Bucharest, Chișinău and Milan. The journey explored empires, communism, religion and identity, while demonstrating how unfamiliar destinations can often become the greatest surprises of all.

Concept

The Magical Mystery Tour series is a slightly ridiculous, entirely unplanned and surprisingly rewarding experiment in spontaneous travel. The concept is simple: each destination is chosen purely because it is the cheapest available flight at time, while avoiding repeat countries and airlines. No fixed itinerary, no forward planning and absolutely no idea where the journey will go next. First stop Istanbul….

Istanbul

Istanbul was chaotic, atmospheric and unforgettable. The city balanced Europe and Asia, Christianity and Islam, history and modern life with remarkable ease. From Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque to the Grand Bazaar and Bosphorus ferries, every corner felt alive with colour, noise, movement and centuries of layered history.

The best trips are the ones you couldn't have planned, because you didn't know the places existed yet.

Skopje

Skopje proved far more interesting than expected. The city combined Ottoman heritage, striking modern monuments and reminders of its Yugoslav past. The bridges, statues and riverside architecture created a unique identity, while the Holocaust Memorial Centre and Mother Teresa connections added depth, reflection and emotional significance to the experience.

Belgrade

Belgrade felt resilient, proud and full of contrasts. The city blended Orthodox spirituality, communist history and vibrant public spaces with ease. Highlights included the Temple of Saint Sava, Belgrade Fortress and the Nikola Tesla Museum. Watching the sunset over the Danube provided a memorable and surprisingly peaceful ending to the visit.

Bucharest

Bucharest revealed a city still shaped by the legacy of communism while steadily redefining itself. Grand buildings such as the Palace of Parliament stood beside churches, memorials and elegant streets reflecting Romanian history and resilience. The contrast between authoritarian excess and modern renewal made the city both fascinating and thought-provoking.

Chișinău

Chișinău offered a quieter and less tourist-driven experience than the other capitals on the tour. The city's Soviet influences, green public spaces and slower pace created a distinctive atmosphere. Beneath its understated appearance was a place shaped by resilience, identity and a determination to preserve its culture and independence.

Milan

Milan provided a stylish and energetic conclusion to the journey. Beyond fashion and finance, the city showcased magnificent architecture, elegant public spaces and rich cultural heritage. The contrast between historic landmarks and modern sophistication captured the confidence of a city that feels ambitious, creative and unmistakably Italian.

Reflection

The second Magical Mystery Tour became an unpredictable journey through history, politics, religion and culture across Eastern and Southern Europe. Each destination offered something completely different, from Ottoman palaces and communist monuments to riverside fortresses and vibrant capitals. Together, the experience captured the excitement of spontaneous travel and constant discovery.
